Russia
has orchestrated a continued campaign against the LGBTQ community, both inside
the country and in areas under this influence. While the West mostly overlooked
the imprisonment and torture of gay men and transgender women, the country
solidified its grip on religious conservatives and the far right. LGBTQ people
have been used as scapegoats for the West. “These acts, which in past
Russian operations have included targeted killings, kidnappings/forced disappearances,
unjust detentions, and the use of torture, would likely target those who oppose
Russian actions, including Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in
Ukraine, journalists and anti-corruption activists, and vulnerable populations
such as religious and ethnic minorities and LGBTQI+ persons,” Crocker warned in a letter.

Uber drivers to be given

ruling
Uber drivers are to be granted key workplace benefits
including a guaranteed minimum wage, holiday pay and pensions from today
following a Supreme Court ruling.
The landmark decision by the ride hailing app means that
70,000 drivers will be treated as “workers” rather than self -employed
contractors for the first time.
He added: “The Supreme Court judgment provides a clearer
path forward, so that we can build a model that gives drivers the protections
of worker status while continuing to let them work flexibly, in the same way
they have been since Uber came to the UK in 2012.”
“Uber is just one part of a larger private-hire industry, so
we hope that all other operators will join us in improving the quality of work
for these important workers who are an essential part of our everyday lives.”

Questions and Answers about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
It is estimated that at least 600,000 women in Europe have
undergone female genital mutilation and 200 million women worldwide. If the
practice continues at the current pace, 68 million girls will be mutilated
between 2015 and 2030 in 25 countries where FGM is routinely practiced and data
is available.
In November 2018, EIGE published a study on the prevalence
of FGM in Belgium, Greece, France, Italy, Cyprus and Malta.
It showed that over half a million first-generation
immigrant women and girls in the EU, Norway and Switzerland had undergone FGM
before their arrival.
FGM is a crime in all EU Member States. In many EU countries
it is also possible to prosecute for conducting FGM abroad, following the
principle of extra-territoriality. This prevents families from taking their
daughters to their country of origin to have them mutilated there.

Chinese lab
experimented on 'highly pathogenic viruses' days before COVID-19 outbreak
THE Wuhan
Institute of Virology was given permission to engage in experimental research
involving highly-pathogenic viruses just 10 days before the first recorded case
of COVID-19.
The
order meant the laboratory could start to engage in more experimental activities
with “highly pathogenic microorganisms” such as the “Ebola virus, Niba virus,
Marburg virus, Lassa fever virus… the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus,
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacillus anthracis and the tick-borne encephalitis
virus.”
Sky News is not suggesting that the
laboratory is responsible in anyway for the outbreak.
It comes as the director of China’s Centre
for Disease Control, Gao Fu, told Chinese state media that the wet market
played a role in spreading the virus but it was not the origin of the outbreak.
“At first, we assumed the seafood market
might have the virus, but now the market is more like a victim,” he told the
Global Times.
He said samples collected from animals in the
market in early January did not contain traces of the virus.

I was not surprised that Beijing tried to shuffle off its
responsibility for the pandemic onto our little furry flying friends. I mean,
the alternative was potentially being held liable for millions of deaths and
countless trillions of dollars in damage to the world’s economy. But I was taken aback
when The Lancet, one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals,
published a letter signed by “27 prominent public health scientists” that
dismissed my lab origin thesis as a “conspiracy theory.”

“strongly condemn[ed] conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not
have a natural origin.”
Then Facebook piled on, suppressing my opinion piece for weeks on end

opportunities to harm you, what you love the deepest, is something i want to
stop in my own life. so i asked him to do whatever they could to stay safe,
stay in the shelter. etc...also i stated that they were lucky to be together,
because the fate of women is often to be separated and scattered, with no
possibility of being together.

Save bees from deadly pesticides
Bees are essential for our survival. They pollinate much of
what we eat and play a critical role in sustaining ecosystems around the world.
But the last decade has been devastating for insect populations, and bees have
been hit hard - with populations shrinking by a third in the UK.
Bee-killing neonicotinoids have been banned across Europe
since 2013, but the UK government has just approved these deadly chemicals for
emergency use - posing a lethal threat to bee populations.
The Environment Minister must act to save our bees and
protect them from harmful chemical farming.

Right now, our government could
do secret trade deals with countries like the US and Australia. That could mean hormone-pumped beef, pus-filled
milk and pesticide-laden fruit and veg on our supermarket
shelves.
This is our opportunity to stop
the government from negotiating these deals in secret, and to
make sure that MPs are able to properly scrutinise deals before they are
official - making it easier to protect our food standards and guarantee that
other vital issues like the climate emergency are factored in.

COVID-19
crisis putting human trafficking victims at risk of further exploitation,
experts warn
New
analysis from the agency shows that the crisis is having an impact on the lives
of trafficking victims before, during and even after their ordeal.
“With COVID-19 restricting movement, diverting law enforcement resources,
and reducing social and public services, human trafficking victims have even
less chance of escape and finding help”, said Ghada Fathi Waly, the UNODC Executive Director.
As
countries have closed their borders due to the pandemic, some victims are
unable to return home. Others face delays in legal proceedings, as well as a
reduction in the support and protection they rely on. Some are also in danger
of further abuse or neglect by their captors.
“Human
trafficking is the result of the failure of our societies and economies to
protect the most vulnerable”, said Ilias Chatzis, chief of the UNODC section
that works to combat this crime.
Children in danger of new
forms of abuse
UNODC said
its partners report that due to the pandemic, more children are being forced
onto the streets to search for food and money, thus increasing their risk of
exploitation.
School
closures have not only blocked access to education but also a source of shelter
and food for millions of children. The UN recently reported that some 370
million students worldwide are now missing out on school meals, often their
only reliable source of nutrition.
Meanwhile,
a UN independent human rights expert has underlined the urgent need for child protection services during
the pandemic.
‘Drive-thru’ services for
child sexual exploitation
Organized crime could benefit
UNODC
warned that the pandemic has also created new opportunities for organized crime
to profit.
“Traffickers
may become more active and prey on people who are even more vulnerable than
before, because they have lost their source of income due to measures to
control the virus”, said Mr. Chatzis, chief of the agency’s Human Trafficking
Section.

Easier than curing a toothache? The Story of Lobotomy.

It is remembered as
the most barbaric medical procedure of the 20th century, but lobotomy was once
hailed as a miracle cure. Claire Prentice explores the archives to

make treating mental illness 'easier than curing a toothache'.

As We Soy, So Shall We Reap
http://gentleworld.org/as-we-soy-so-shall-we-reap/
Despite the overwhelming evidence of the environmental
disaster of animal agriculture, there seems to be a growing movement – promoted
by environmentalists themselves – that is against vegan diets, for reasons of
environmental sustainability.
When examined just a
little more closely, it becomes clear that this theory is quite ludicrous.
There is no way that the current population of vegetarians and vegans could
possibly create such demand for soy. In fact, the disturbing reality that is being
revealed about the ecological destruction caused by commercial soy sounds more
like something one would associate with… well… the animal industry.
“About 85 percent of the world’s
soybean crop is processed into meal and vegetable oil, and virtually all of
that meal is used in animal feed
According to Grist.org:
“As of 2004, 85 percent of the U.S. soy crop was
genetically modified, accounting for some 63.6 million acres of soybeans.
Statistics for 2003 indicate that at least 55 percent of soy worldwide is now
genetically modified.”
http://gentleworld.org/as-we-soy-so-shall-we-reap/
https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/challenges/soya/
Like palm oil, the global food industry has
become utterly reliant on soya. The size of the global meat
and dairy industry has exploded and soya production has vastly
increased to meet it.
Most soya comes from the
Americas and nearly half from just two countries, Brazil and Argentina. Growth
of the soya industry has been meteoric – production in Brazil has quadrupled in
just 20 years. The UK imports huge quantities of soya and globally some 90% of soya is used to feed animals, including cows,
pigs and chickens.
Soya
is destroying other forests
Since the early 1990s, pesticide use has increased by more
than 170% in both Argentina and Brazil. These chemicals wipe out other plants
and insects, pollute water supplies, and cause health problems for agricultural
workers.

Marine Le Pen: National Rally
leader goes on trial for Islamic State tweets
The President of the National Rally (RN) is accused of breaking
hate speech laws by tweeting three images in December 2015 alongside the words
"Daesh, that's it!"
Le Pen claims the tweets were published in response to a
journalist who drew a comparison between her party and IS. The dispute came
just weeks after 130 people were killed by jihadists in the Paris terror
attacks.
One of the pictures showed the body of James Foley, an American
journalist who was beheaded by Islamic militants in 2014. Le Pen later deleted
the picture of Foley after a request from his family, saying she had been
unaware of his identity.
Gilbert Collard, an MEP for the National Rally, is also on trial
in Nanterre for distributing other gruesome photos of IS actions online.
In 2018 a judge charged the two with circulating "violent
messages that incite terrorism or pornography or seriously harm human
dignity" and that can be seen by children. The crime is punishable by up
to three years in prison and a fine of €75,000.

Queer History and the Holocaust
Same-sex sexuality in the prisoner society
The first studies of the Holocaust and concentration camps
were written by survivors. These early works set up homophobic patterns that
have proved durable.
Men with the pink triangle were almost always in the lowest
ranks of the prisoner society and only very rarely gained positions of power
History of the persecution of queer men and women
Until the 1970s, historians failed to discuss the Nazi
persecution of homosexuals.
If queer men have received only limited attention in
histories of the Holocaust, research into histories of queer women in Nazi
Germany is even more under-researched.
Significantly, Claudia Schopmann and Alexander Wäldner have shown that some women were indeed
sentenced under §175.
Overall, for women as for men, persecution often took place
intersectionally – that is, same-sex sexuality was rarely the only factor. The
repressive climate against female conduct in general, and queer women in
particular, also played a role.
This
erasure of lesbian persecution is characteristic of German historiography (which
represents almost all of the research on this topic). Research on lesbians has
long not been recognized or seen as relevant for wider histories of Nazi
Germany.
But the discomfort
about and erasure of queer sexuality in studies of the Holocaust demonstrates
that the history of this genocide has too often been written normatively,
violently, and with prejudice.

Women fleeing Burkina Faso violence face sexual assault
KAYA,
Burkina Faso —
A 20-year-old woman could no longer live in her village amid the rising
violence caused by Islamic extremists. But she needed to return and retrieve
the family’s cows in hopes of selling them.
If her husband
went, jihadists would almost certainly kill him. She went instead, and was
dragged into the bush, beaten and raped at knifepoint.
The extremist violence in
Burkina Faso linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group is fueling an
increase in sexual assaults against women, especially those displaced by
attacks.
The government increased security around the town and is
advising women not to go into the bush alone.
Yet mothers trying to feed their children say they have
little choice.

We direly need lawyers to challenge the sacrosanct

sacrifices, conversion therapies for gay people, LGBT rights, women status
eroded...etc...). I hope the legal community will react and assemble.
I tried to start a petition with the government in the UK,

regarded widely as holy or at least as conferring religious authority. The
state administration answered that it was religious matters and on these
grounds my petition got refused and deleted.

When we are the violent: The Chechen Islamist guerrillas'
discourse on their own armed actions
For CDA, nonetheless, discourse is much more than a sequence
of linguistic signs; it is, moreover, a three-dimensional entity: text,
discursive practice, and sociocultural practice (Fairclough, 1995). It is text
insofar as it is understood as a product of language. Its analysis – text
analysis – is descriptive, focusing on the structure and formal aspects of
discourse, such as vocabulary, grammar, deixis, and its organization. It is
also discursive practice, linked to text production and interpretation,
inasmuch as it is associated with an established genre or type of discourse
connected to a particular social activity. And, lastly, it is sociocultural
practice, seeing that it explains the relationship between the discursive
process and social processes, since discourse constructs or reproduces a
reality, transmits or transforms ideologies, perpetrates or subverts power
relations and domination through its linguistic structures (Fairclough, 1992,
Foucault, 1992, Wodak, Meyer, 2009). These three dimensions are not expressed
independently, but holistically. It is a material, delimited, and delimitable
product – it is text – elaborated on the basis of specific patterns, practices,
and hierarchies – it is discursive practice – and permeated by potentially
transmittable beliefs, myths, imaginaries, and ideologies – it is social practice.
In this regard, in the analysis conducted as part of this study attention was
paid to the linguistic devices of Chechen Islamist propaganda, its structures
of creation, and its possible sociocultural insertion, insofar as it tried to
explain and justify its own violence against the Russian enemy.

the big problem that it is there is that we talk about the

Lyon school canteens going vegetarian: The meat
of the matter
Heated debates in
France over meatless meals in schools
https://mediaindia.eu/politics/lyon-school-canteens-going-vegetarian-the-meat-of-the-matter/
Just a day earlier, French agriculture minister Julien Denormandie
had asked local officials in Lyon to bet on meat in the school menus to help
the meat growing industry. He also said that he had raised the issue with
the Prefet,
administrative head of the region. Interior minister Gerald Darmanin had also
sharply criticised the decision of the Green party Mayor of Lyon Gregory Doucet
as hurting the poorer sections of the society. Darmanin said that the Greens
were imposing a “scandalous ideology” and “moralist policies”, on top of
offering up an “unacceptable insult” to French farmers and butchers.
The far-right party of Marine Le Pen, Rassemblement
Nationale, has also criticised the move to go vegetarian saying it was against
the French culture and culinary traditions.
Certainly, the prospect of losing this lucrative slice is
bound to give them and a whole lot of others a bout of severe indigestion.

Citing logistics problems, Lyon’s mayor Gregory Doucet
decided to temporarily provide the city’s 29,000 school children meals without
meat from Monday, although the city will still serve eggs and fish.
“This is absurd from a nutritional point of view and a
scandal from a social point of view,” Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie
said on RTL radio on Tuesday.
On his Twitter feed on Saturday, conservative Interior
Minister Gerald Darmanin slammed the “scandalous ideology” of the Lyon city
government.

PRESS FREEDOM
I was just listening to a French radio program on French
media independence and quality, I am trying here to summarize it:
Content created by journalistic media, but advertisement
paid to google and social media instead of being paid to the journals and
newspapers online. In turn, social media and search engines will not create
articles and will not pay journalists. In consequence journalism is thus being
killed.
To still make profit, journalism low-cost, that is,
journalism that deal with opinions and debates instead of paying people to
study independently a subject and more importantly to investigate unknown or
undealt with problems.
Also independent media that investigate are often if not
always (when not protected by law against being bought), bought once they
gained influence by big broadcasters, such as national or international
companies owning the internet and the telephone networks! And of course aiming
at monopolisation, as well as not being a public good and protecting free press
and non-profit journalism, but that are an agglomeration of companies selling
information for profit.
A lot of hope could reside in monopolies such as google to
be stopped, only by them to be taxed normally in the countries in which they
operate. In France taxation of the GAFAM (an acronym for the stocks of American
technology companies: Google; Apple; Facebook; Amazon; and Microsoft) has been
at the centre of debates for several years now, but people also say that even
if done the targets that are today on the table, would in fact just be token
measures, not affecting significantly these leviathans.
Macron yet again being accused of being about only speech,
of green washing.
Anti-trust legislation certainly being the best option, and
of course taxation in all other countries and also stopping the monetisation of
the web to such extent that only international companies or big companies might
be listed, as they appeared by default in all searches as first choices, while
local businesses never appear even though they are alone to match the search
initiated- because of not being able to pay for the ads, even if they pay they
cannot pay more than the biggest companies that then sell the services of the
local and take extortionary introducing fees, for example.
Was reading about the prevalence of polygamy in Mormons.
Here what I found on a BBC page. I hope it is a mistake but
the item is praising the ‘preacher’ who initiated the practise:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/mormon/socialvalues/polygamy.shtml
Modern Mormon teachings about polygamy, the history and why
so many people still associate Mormons with plural marriages.
Polygamy and the Latter-day
Saints
The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints discontinued
polygamy over a century ago and excommunicates anyone who practices
it.
The reason many people
associate Mormonism with polygamy is that the Church did support plural
marriage until 1890.
Joseph
Smith introduced plural marriage early in the history of the
Church as the result of a revelation from God. He
first wrote about it in 1843, although the revelation had occurred much
earlier.
Although many justifications
were offered for the practice of plural marriage, there was really only one
reason for it: God had told the Mormons to do it.
It took great courage to introduce this practice, as Smith was aware that
it would expose the Church to ferocious attack, as well as putting himself in
personal danger.
The early Mormons were often
unwilling to enter a plural marriage, and many only did so after much prayer
and anguish.

Nestlé S.A. (French pronunciation: ; English , , ) is a
Swiss transnational food and beverage company headquartered in Vevey, Vaud,
Switzerland. It is the largest food company in the world measured by
revenues,[4][5] and ranked #72 on the Fortune Global 500 in 2014.[6]
In May 2015, Food Safety Regulators from
the Uttar Pradesh, India found that samples of Nestlé's leading noodles Maggi had up to 17
times beyond permissible safe limits of lead in addition
to monosodium glutamate.[39][40][41][42]
In June 2015 Nepal indefinitely
banned Maggi over concerns about lead levels in the product.[48] On the same day
Food Safety Agency, United Kingdom has launched an investigation to find levels of lead
in Maggi.[49] Maggi noodles has
been withdrawn in five African nations- Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and
South Sudan
Nestlé's baby food product Nan-Pro has also been found to
contain "live larvae" in India.[57] In another incident weevils and
fungus were found in Cerelac baby food.[58][59]
In late September 2008, the Hong Kong government found
melamine in a Chinese-made Nestlé milk product. Six infants died from kidney
damage, and a further 860 babies were hospitalised.[60][61] The Dairy Farm milk
was made by Nestlé's division in the Chinese coastal city Qingdao.[62] Nestlé
affirmed that all its products were safe and were not made from milk
adulterated with melamine. On 2 October 2008, the Taiwan Health ministry
announced that six types of milk powders produced in China by Nestlé contained
low-level traces of melamine, and were "removed from the
shelves".[63]
In June 2009, an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 was linked to
Nestlé's refrigerated cookie dough originating in a plant in Danville,
Virginia. In the US, it caused sickness in more than 50 people in 30 states,
half of whom required hospitalisation.

Gaza's
Tunnels, Now Used to Attack Israel, Began as Economic Lifelines
Israel's Operation Protective Edge aims to prevent underground incursions
from Gaza.
Until recently, though, the tunnels extended only into Egypt
and were used mainly to smuggle in consumer goods.
Now citizens of Gaza appear to be applying tunnel thinking
to its attack strategy. A new network of Hamas-built tunnels into Israel was
created expressly for launching attacks, according to news reports.
In a public statement released as the incursion began, Hamas
said that the new tunnels—some of which apparently extend hundreds of yards into Israeli territory—are
just one of the "surprises" it has in store for Israelis.
There are connections between the Egyptian and Israeli tunnel
networks. It's believed
Hamas used the Egyptian tunnels to smuggle firearms and rockets—weapons that
are now being used against the Israelis—into Gaza.
And the cement used to build Hamas's network of underground
bunkers probably came, in part, from Egypt. The same may true of the materials
used to build the new tunnels that go into Israel.
When Egypt destroyed most of the older smuggling tunnels
last year, it deprived Hamas of a vital source of revenue. The group's
inability to provide for Gazans, worsened by its lack of funds, has turned some
against Hamas.
The Long History Of The
Gaza Tunnels
An Israeli army officer on Friday shows journalists a
Palestinian tunnel that runs from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Israel says its
current military campaign is aimed at destroying the tunnels.
The
Hamas ‘Metro’ tunnel network: Secret, sprawling and in Israeli crosshairs
The Israeli military has taken journalists on
tours of tunnels it has captured, showing them to be surprisingly sophisticated
structures with concrete walls, electricity and carts, and some journalists have been shown around operational tunnels by militants.
About 30 tunnels were destroyed during the 2014
conflict. At the time, Israeli officials said Hamas had built more than 1,300
tunnels since 2007 at a cost of $1.25 billion, diverting funds that could have
been spent on public infrastructure in Gaza.

IRAN: 30+ YEARS IN PRISON FOR PROTESTING FORCED
VEILING LAWS
Three women have been charged with 'inciting
prostitution' for not wearing veils and sentenced to 30+ years in prison
between them.
Flowers on the train
As an act of peaceful protest, Monireh, Yasaman and Mojgan handed
out flowers to female passengers on a metro train in Tehran.
The unveiled women were filmed sharing their hopes for a future
where all women in Iran would have the freedom to choose what to wear.
Days after the video went viral on social media, they were charged
with sham offences including ‘inciting prostitution’ for choosing not
to wear veils and are now serving 31 years 8 months in prison
between them.
They are in grave danger
A worrying trend
This is the latest in a worrying trend of crackdowns against women
human rights defenders in Iran.
Earlier in 2019 Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to 38 years in
prison and 148 lashes for defending women who peacefully protested for women to
have the right to choose what to wear.

China worst offender in record-breaking year for
jailing of journalists
This article is more than 11 months old
Number of journalists imprisoned
globally for their work hits new record in 2020
As of 1 December, at least 274 journalists were behind bars
in relation to their work, according to the CPJ survey. This figure does not
include those who had been arrested and released, paroled, or assaulted in the
course of performing their duties.
China jailed at least 47 journalists in 2020, 10 more than
in Turkey, where journalists continue to be sent to prison despite a fall in
numbers since the 2016 attempted coup.
Among the journalists jailed in
China, several are serving long sentences or are being held without
charge. Some have not been heard from
in some time, or are known to be held in
horrific conditions, including those
arrested for reporting on
the Wuhan lockdown. Many are accused of espionage.
No to neonics
Evidence has shown the
loss of 50% or more of our insects since 1970, and the shocking reality that
41% of the Earth's remaining five million insect species are now 'threatened

should not have to choose between farming and nature. We
want farmers to be supported to adopt non-chemical alternatives that are proven
to support nature long-term.

Do proposed reforms of Spain's
controversial 'gag law' go far enough?
But the proposed reforms have galvanised protest on both
sides of the divide, pitting police associations against human rights
collectives, and the right against the left, further polarising the country.
“Disobedience
and a lack of respect are the most exploited offences by the police because
they are completely ambiguous and allow for a great deal of flexibility
However,
citizens have been deemed to lack respect for a range of perceived
misdemeanours from smirking at a police officer to calling them
"mate" to engaging in polite disagreement.
“It’s not even about being insulting,” counters López. “Any
disagreement with a police officer can be interpreted as a lack of respect.
Disagreements are costly in this country.”

Strangers in Their Own Land: Romani Survivors in Europe 1945
In France, for example, the interned “nomads” were held in
the camps and many were not released until June 1946. New research has revealed
the participation of Romani men in the French Resistance, but also a shameful
story of victimization after the liberation, by neighbors and Resistance
activists who “naturally” suspected them of collaboration. In southern Moravia
(Czechoslovakia) in the summer of 1945, the return of a handful of Romani
families prompted five local mayors to protest that “in spite of all the
suffering they endured, most of them have not changed for the better: work-shy,
thieving, etc.”; they recommended resettling the survivors in a border area, “where
they could be set to work under surveillance.” In German towns they were often
assigned to sites on the outskirts where they camped or were housed in
emergency barracks—and where they remained for generations after the post-war
emergency was past.
“Rejected: Policy not to grant Resettlement Services to
Gipsy.”
IRO Eligibility Officer
While emigration was an important route to a new life for
many Jews in post-war Europe, it was less of an option for Romani survivors,
even if they had lost all ties or their circumstances meant that simply going
back home was unrealistic. The prejudice against “Gypsies” was global, and
families who sought emigration through agencies like the UNRRA/IRO were
sometimes turned away as undesirables.
Until 1963, the official position of the West German courts
was that their racial persecution (the qualification for compensation) had only
begun in 1942, with the deportation to Auschwitz. The harassment, exclusion,
internment, sterilization, and slave labor that they had suffered before were
all justified by their criminal and antisocial behaviour. And even when the
legal position changed, their testimony was often not believed. Discriminatory
regulations and police practices continued as though the genocide had never happened.
In other countries, too, the persecution of Roma was a
non-subject.

Investigation: Field Farm Duck Eggs
Appalling
conditions filmed at Lincolnshire Duck Farm supplying major egg suppliers
Over two decades after we first exposed duck factory farming,
comes the release of disturbing
new footage from inside a filthy Lincolnshire duck egg farm
Ducks are semi-aquatic birds who would naturally
spend a huge amount of time in the water. It’s fundamental to their mental and
physical well-being as they use open water for head-dipping, swimming, bathing
and feeding.
However,
our investigation found the farm has no water baths for the ducks, their only
access to water is through dirty bell drinkers, robbing these captive
waterbirds of their natural behaviours. Thousands of birds are forced to live
on layer-upon-layer of decayed excreta with nowhere to clean themselves.

My name is Fatima and I'm a Campaigns Fellow at All Out, an
activist, and a grassroots community organiser in Ghana. In recent years, I've
seen the rights of my community taken away by right-wing religious extremists.
I'm here to bring you a warning of what
this force of hate is capable of.
At the start of last year, an LGBT+ community center was raided
by police and shut down by the government. 21 activists were unlawfully
arrested, detained, and abused for 3 weeks. Soon after, Parliament tried to
pass an anti-LGBT+ hate bill - the same kind we've seen in other countries as
well.
These are not isolated events, but
part of a coordinated global attack by right-wing extremists, heavily funded by
evangelical religious institutions. It's estimated that in the 10 years between
2008 and 2017, U.S.-based
organisations like these funneled over 1 billion dollars overseas to promote
their hateful beliefs.
A coordinated global attack on our rights
must be answered with a coordinated global defense! That's where you come in.
Thanks to the All Out community, we were able to fight back here
in Ghana.
Immediately after the 21 activists were arrested, All Out
members donated enough to support their eventual release by covering legal
costs, food, and medical supplies. But it didn't stop there – thanks to the
public outcry from our global community, all charges were dropped!
But the fight continues. Ghana's anti-LGBT+ law, which would
criminalise LGBT+ people and LGBT+ activism with up to 10 years in jail, is
still on the table. It's one of the most severe anti-LGBT+ laws to arise in
recent history.
It's all under the false guise of LGBT+
people being "non-religious" and "perversions against
religion" – ideas actively exported by evangelicals from the U.S.

Russia
has orchestrated a continued campaign against the LGBTQ community, both inside

the imprisonment and torture of gay men and transgender women, the country
solidified its grip on religious conservatives and the far right. LGBTQ people
have been used as scapegoats for the West. “These acts, which in past
Russian operations have included targeted killings, kidnappings/forced

those who oppose Russian actions, including Russian and Belarusian dissidents
in exile in Ukraine, journalists and anti-corruption activists, and vulnerable
populations such as religious and ethnic minorities and LGBTQI+ persons,” Crocker warned in a letter.
